START serves thousands of participants across the New York City area. START’s equity-based, whole-person approach to care is built on 54 years of experience providing methadone, a life-saving medication for opioid use disorder, as well as cutting edge biomedical and social science research. Today, our 9 programs provide evidence-based care and support services to adults with opioid use disorder and/or those with co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions, as well as youth with mental health challenges.
About
START began treating patients in a single building at 937 Fulton Street in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, and has grown into one of New York State’s largest and oldest minority-led drug treatment, non-hospital health, and human services providers programs in the country. One of the first clinics in Brooklyn still serves those in desperate need.
During our organization’s 54-year history, we have seen many challenges on both the local and global scale and have adapted our programming to meet the ever-changing needs of our patients.Throughout all these challenges, we have remained dedicated to our mission and the communities we serve.
In 2013, the agency rebranded under the name START Treatment & Recovery Centers, Inc. During this same period, START, acknowledging the growing needs of adolescents, was contracted to provide mental health services to this vulnerable population at detention centers in the Bronx and Brooklyn.
